Did they ask you questions... or where they able to answer questions you asked them?  Ask how tech support is given, and where from.

When selecting cameras, we only like cameras featuring Sony CCDs.  Simply... they do much better in adverse lighting conditions than other brands.  Make sure that the DVRs are able to record in 640x480 resolution or higher.

When purchasing locally, check to see how long they were in business for, and again check them via bbb.org.
