type of connector 2 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
I am helping a family member with a camera system in his home and he has a quad which is a complete Proprietary system ant the connectors are just like a mouse or a keyboard on a computer small 4 pin connectors. I was wondering what they were called and if they may any kind of connector to convert it to rca or bnc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In my personal opinion, there is no reason for CCTV manufacturers to use proprietary cables except to make it difficult for the end user to move to a competitive product. What you ask in your post is echoed so many times each day here on the phones. Typically, it involves a system that was purchased some months ago from a local wholesale club, which is now causing problems. Unfortunately, the news for you is not good.

If you have a business with either a drop ceiling or open ceiling, I would highly suggest that you completely rip out your old system (including cables) and replace it with a real system that uses standard BNC style connectors. There are two main reasons for this (1) Proprietary systems typically do not last long since if any one part goes out the system is typically toast & (2) I've never seen one that worked well in the first place that was easy to use and produce a good picture (for very long).

The main problem I see today with wholesale club CCTV systems is that it is very difficult to find one that records at full screen (640x480). Most of the ones we are called about typically record at quarter to half screen size. They may appear half OK when looking at live video... but take a look at the recorded video and you will understand exactly what I am talking about.

BTW - the name of the adapter is called a "DIN" or a "Mini-DIN" style connector. You may wish to check with radio shack or go to mouser.com to see if they still sell a DIN to RCA adapter (then you will also need a RCA to BNC adapter to go to your DVR).

Really... not unless the proprietary cable was installed in the walls or is in a hard to reach area... it's simply not worth the time and trouble trying to salvage them.

If your friend just purchased the system and is still able to return it... then I highly suggest that he do so. Let me know if you need more help.
